Best Practices for Audio Capture & Device Permissions

Updated over 6 months ago

This guide will help you optimize your device setup for using Skriber app during both in-person and tele-health consultations. By following these audio capture and device setup best practices, you’ll maximize Skriber’s accuracy for producing high-quality, reliable notes.

Audio Capture Best Practices

Scenario

Best Practice

Telehealth Visits

Avoid using headphones or headsets; Skriber must capture both sides of the conversation. Open your tele-health platform in one window and Skriber in another. If echo cancellation technology is interfering with audio capture on a single device, try using Skriber on a second device (e.g., a smartphone).

Headphones/Headsets

Headphones (including AirPods) should not be used for tele-health visits as they won’t pick up the other side of the conversation but can be used for direct dictations.

Phone Calls

Use Skriber on a separate device, like a tablet or computer, and place the call on speaker to capture the audio.

Quiet Environment

Maintain a quiet setting. Background noise, particularly other conversations, can impact audio clarity and reduce transcription accuracy.

Laptop Setup

Position your laptop as close to yourself and your patient as possible. Ensure the laptop mic is pointed toward the conversation and check the mic volume indicator to confirm audio is being captured.

Phone or Tablet Setup

Place your device on a stable surface between you and your patient. Observe the mic volume indicator to confirm it is capturing the conversation.

External Microphones

Position external microphones close to both parties, oriented toward the conversation, and watch the mic volume indicator for consistent capture.

Screen Lock Prevention

Depending on device settings, Skriber may not prevent the screen from locking. Check your screen periodically to ensure it’s recording, and resume if it pauses.

Desktop Browsing

Certain browsers may pause audio capture when navigating to a different window or tab. Ensure Skriber’s window remains visible while navigating other tabs (e.g., your EHR).

Switching Apps on Mobile

Leaving the Skriber app will freeze audio capture, so avoid navigating to other apps during a recording.

Following these tips will enhance your experience and maintain audio integrity across different setups.
